The Irony of Pumped Up Kicks

Everyone has heard the hit by Foster The People, “Pumped Up Kicks”.  It was one of the most well-known songs of 2011, and carries on into 2012. Now most people will debate what the song is about, and several ‘true’ theories have come up. It is about a fictional boy in a very real situation.

What I find most ironic about it, is that people either don’t realize how poppy it is, or they don’t realize how dark it is. I like the duality of this song. It’s a catchy song, and sometimes I feel guilty; singing about a homicidal boy. But Foster The People managed to bring a message with meaning through a song that just got stuck in peoples head.

Not many bands can do things like that. Alot of todays catchy hits are either completely innappropriate or have no meaning. This song is now usually overlooked by radios, and they would rather play Bruno Mars or Taylor Swift, but the song has not lost it’s popularity.
